Worksheet 2 – Complete Solutions

Question 1

In each of the following cases, show that the rational numbers are equivalent.

(i) 49\frac{4}{9} and 4499\frac{44}{99}

Solution:

49×1111=4×119×11=4499\frac{4}{9}\times\frac{11}{11} = \frac{4\times11}{9\times11} = \frac{44}{99}

Therefore,

49=4499\boxed{\frac{4}{9}=\frac{44}{99}}

Hence, the rational numbers are equivalent.

(ii) 7−3\frac{7}{-3} and 35−15\frac{35}{-15}

7−3×55=7×5−3×5=35−15\frac{7}{-3}\times\frac{5}{5} = \frac{7\times5}{-3\times5} = \frac{35}{-15}

Therefore,

7−3=35−15\boxed{\frac{7}{-3}=\frac{35}{-15}}

Hence, the rational numbers are equivalent.

(iii) −35\frac{-3}{5} and −1220\frac{-12}{20}

−35×44=−3×45×4=−1220\frac{-3}{5}\times\frac{4}{4} = \frac{-3\times4}{5\times4} = \frac{-12}{20}

Therefore,

−35=−1220\boxed{\frac{-3}{5}=\frac{-12}{20}}

Hence, the rational numbers are equivalent.

Question 2

In each of the following cases, show that the rational numbers are not equivalent.

(i) 49\frac{4}{9} and 1627\frac{16}{27}

For two rational numbers ab\frac{a}{b} and cd\frac{c}{d}, they are equivalent if:

a×d=b×ca\times d=b\times c

Here,

4×27=1084\times27=108 9×16=1449\times16=144

Since,

108≠144108\neq144

Therefore,

49≠1627\boxed{\frac{4}{9}\neq\frac{16}{27}}

Hence, they are not equivalent rational numbers.

(ii) −1003\frac{-100}{3} and 3009\frac{300}{9}

(−100)×9=−900(-100)\times9=-900 3×300=9003\times300=900

Since,

−900≠900-900\neq900

Therefore,

−1003≠3009\boxed{\frac{-100}{3}\neq\frac{300}{9}}

Hence, they are not equivalent rational numbers.

(iii) 3−17\frac{3}{-17} and 8−51\frac{8}{-51}

3×(−51)=−1533\times(-51)=-153 (−17)×8=−136(-17)\times8=-136

Since,

−153≠−136-153\neq-136

Therefore,

3−17≠8−51\boxed{\frac{3}{-17}\neq\frac{8}{-51}}

Hence, they are not equivalent rational numbers.

36108=36÷2108÷2=1854\frac{36}{108} = \frac{36\div2}{108\div2} = \frac{18}{54}

Dividing by 3:

36108=36÷3108÷3=1236\frac{36}{108} = \frac{36\div3}{108\div3} = \frac{12}{36}

Dividing by 4:

36108=36÷4108÷4=927\frac{36}{108} = \frac{36\div4}{108\div4} = \frac{9}{27}
